오바마 의원은 이날 대통령 수락연설 말미에 애틀랜타주의 106세 여성유권자 앤 닉슨 쿠퍼(Ann Nixon Cooper)를 언급하며 “지난 106년간 미국에서 가장 훌륭한 시대와 어두운 시대를 모두 겪어본 그녀는 미국이 어떻게 변할지 알았다”고 말했다.
이어 “그분은 노예제가 있던 시대의 일원이었다”며 “비행기나 자동차도 없던 시절 흑인 여성이라는 이유만으로 그녀는 투표할 수 없었다. 하지만 그녀는 오늘 투표를 했다”고 강조했다. 그리고 오바마는 청중을 향해 “예스, 위 캔(그래, 우린 할 수 있다)”이라고 외쳤다.
오바마의 수락연설이 끝난 뒤 언론의 관심은 단번에 쿠퍼에게 몰렸고 급기야 기자회견까지 열렸다. 쿠퍼는 이날 오후 애틀란타 자택에서 가진 기자회견에서 “유세기간 중 밤 늦게까지 TV로 그의 연설을 지켜봤다. 나는 매우 흥분됐고, 절대 흑인대통령이 나올 거라고는 생각하지 못했다. 절대로”라고 말했다.
역사적인 대통령 수락연설에 등장한 쿠퍼는 오바마가 오랫동안 마음에 품고 있었던 그런 인물이었다.
20살 때 치과의사와 결혼하면서 애틀란타에 자리 잡게 된 쿠퍼는 공익사업에 뛰어들었다. 그는 애틀란타 흑인 소녀들을 위한 복지재단을 설립하는데 일조하면서 보육협회에서 50년 넘게 일했다. 또 1970년대부턴 인근의 한 침례교회에서 지역사회를 위한 교육 프로그램을 주도했다.
1980년, 마침내 쿠퍼는 흑인사회에 대한 기여를 인정 받아 애틀란타의 한 지역방송으로부터 공로상을 수상하면서 유명세를 타기 시작했다. 그리고 이런 사연을 알게 된 오바마 진영이 4일(현지시간) 오후 쿠퍼에게 전화를 걸었던 것.
“당신은 미국에서 가장 유명한 사람이 될 것입니다.” 수십 년간 흑인여성으로 흑인사회발전에 힘쓴 그를 수락연설에서 언급하겠다며 사전 양해를 구했다. 영국의 일간지 더 타임즈(The Times)는 이를 두고 “오바마의 매우 현명한 선택이다. 흑인에 대한 보수 유권자들의 고정관념을 단번에 무너뜨렸다”고 평했다.
1902년 미국 테네시 주에서 태어난 쿠퍼는 삼촌·이모와 함께 부유한 백인의 집에서 하인으로 일했던 노예제의 '살아있는 증인'이다. 현재 쿠퍼는 14명의 손자를 포함해 수십 명의 증손자와 증증손자가 있다. 그의 곁은 83살의 딸이 지키고 있다.
쿠퍼는 일간지 더 선과의 인터뷰에서 말했다. “오바마가 대통령이 못 됐더라도 단지 대통령 후보에 지명된 것만으로도 행복했을 겁니다. 그런데 첫 흑인 대통령 탄생을 지켜보게 되다니, 정말 짜릿하지 않아요, 내 나이 106살에 말이에요.”

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that`s on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She`s a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn`t vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.
And tonight, I think about all that she`s seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can`t, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.
At a time when women`s voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.
When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose.
Yes we can.
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome."
Yes we can.
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
Yes we can.
